Executive Director

Job Description:  

The Executive Director is responsible for leadership and management of the La Jolla Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, whose mission includes the discovery, collection and preservation of La Jolla’s heritage. The Executive Director oversees the Society’s operations including archival collection management, museum exhibitions, program development and management, fund raising and donor relations, grant writing, event supervision, docent program, membership, preservation efforts, staff supervision, human resources, risk management, accounting, facilities management, marketing and public relations.  He/she is the chief spokesperson for the Society in the community, building and strengthening our existing good reputation with the general public and various governmental agencies.In addition, the Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors and committee chairs in fulfilling the objectives defined in the Society’s Strategic Plan, including the restoration and renovation of the historic Wisteria Cottage campus.  He/she also develops and manages the Society’s annual budget approved by the Board of Directors, ending the year with a balanced budget.  The Executive Director reports to, and works in close partnership with, a Board of Directors.

Qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum
  • Nonprofit management experience preferred
  • Museum, library, and/or collections-based organizational experience desired
  • Energetic self-starter
  • Proven fundraising experience
  • Excellent public speakerStrong communications and writing skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), e-mail and research/analysis tools, including web-based media
