Every spring, the La Jolla Historical Society extends a rare invitation to the public to stroll behind the garden gates of some of La Jolla’s loveliest, secluded gardens, normally concealed from view by strategic growth of mature trees, vines or foliage. The Tour aims to feature a variety of garden styles. Past tours have showcased some of La Jolla’s large estate gardens, as well as intimate cottage-style, romantic Mediterranean, formal French and English gardens. The locations are kept secret and only revealed in the program distributed the day of the Tour. The gardens will again be enhanced with music performed by local musicians, tabletop displays by local designers and merchants, and by La Jolla artists in the process of capturing each home and garden’s unique beauty.

The Secret Garden Tour raises awareness of the La Jolla Historical Society and its efforts to celebrate this unique community.  The Tour generates essential financial support for the Society’s mission to make La Jolla’s diverse past a relevant part of contemporary life, with opportunities for residents and visitors to explore history, art, ideas and culture.

La Jolla Historical Society kicks off the 2017 Secret Garden Tour with a new event - a Friday Night Candlelight Garden Soirée!  Event Chair Claudia Johnson will host this premier event in her beautiful garden, as seen on the 2016 Secret Garden Tour and featured in November 2016 San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles magazine. “Cloaked in vines, the walled garden feels like a secret garden— a romantic, rustic landscape brimming with vintage birdcages stuffed with plants, rustic arbors covered with trumpet, grape and wisteria vines, set amongst a fountain and spacious patios.”

This intimate garden gathering provides guests an opportunity to mix and mingle with other garden enthusiasts while enjoying hors d'oeuvres, wine and music all by candlelight. The evening also provides an opportunity to meet special guest Nan Sterman, garden designer, botanist, author and host of the popular KPBS show "A Growing Passion." Nan is well known for speaking, teaching, and writing about low water, sustainable and edible gardening in San Diego County.

This enchanting evening garden experience has a limited number of tickets and will sell out quickly. Tickets are available for $75 or $65 with the purchase of a Secret Garden Tour Platinum tour ticket.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Every Sponsorship helps support the La Jolla Historical Society’s efforts to preserve La Jolla’s heritage. Proceeds from this event make it possible for the Society to care for its extensive and unique collections, create and expand educational programs, and support efforts to advocate for the preservation of La Jolla’s special character. Our community’s heritage is something to be proud of and events like the Secret Garden Tour enable the Society to be a true champion of that heritage.
