Adopt-a-Tree

Help us preserve this community orchard and gathering space

In 2024, La Jolla Historical Society was proud to present the exhibition Helen and Newton Harrison: California Work in conjunction with Getty’s prestigious PST Art & Science Collide program. Helen Mayer and Newton Harrison, known as the Harrisons, were long-time La Jolla residents and today are recognized as two of the most influential environmental artists. A central project of the exhibition was to re-envision the 1972 artwork Portable Orchard.

Realized in collaboration with high school students from High Tech Mesa, the project features 12 citrus trees planted in beautiful, hexagonal, redwood planters. It has been embraced by the community for its natural beauty and seen as a welcoming gesture inviting guests onto LJHS’s historic campus.

Today, you’re invited to adopt one (or more!) of these thriving trees in the orchard and simultaneously make a lasting impact on LJHS’s future.

Help maintain this vibrant artwork and contribute to the beautification of your neighborhood!
